NEWS!

  • Thanks to all who attended my presentation, The Business of Writing Books, at the Orlando Public Library! My next workshop, How to Binge Write Your Novel, will be presented at the Alafaya Library on July 12 at 7:00pm! More info coming soon!
  • I have been writing, writing, writing! Here’s what I’m working on:
    • Love on the Rocks has been submitted for the first round of edits. It’s on schedule to release in early September!
    • 3 stories for 3 different anthologies! The Fisherman Nutcracker, a tale from Crane’s Cove, and A Night at the Inn (Where are my Lizzie Borden fanatics? Only the cat truly knows what happened that morning…!) Both will release at Indie Book Fest in August. More info coming soon! The last story, yet untitled, will be for the How I Met My Other anthology, coming out in early 2019.
    • I’m also working on a novella for a very popular Kindle World, due out in November… Here’s a clue – you’ll want your toes in the sand and a mimosa in your hand when you read it!
  • Rob Hare will be back to do my next cover for Love on the Rocks! I am so beyond thrilled and can’t wait to see what he comes up with! He was the last piece; I’m so very blessed that my entire publishing team is back for my second book. Racquel Henry, Nicole, Ayers, Valerie Willis, and L. E. Perez are so wonderful to work with and I can’t imagine publishing traditionally and not having the control and collaboration opportunities that Indie publishing allows. It’s hard work, expensive and limited as far as sales go, but I’m good with that.
  • Have you downloaded Meemaw’s Recipes Cards? Meemaw is character in the story that is a force! Imagine Rose from The Golden Girls with a sassy, take-charge southern lady attitude. She’ll appear in the next few books, and we’ll be adding recipe cards to the collection as we go. Special thanks to Valerie Willis of Battle Goddess Productions for designing the cards - I love how you can just fold them in half and stand them up on your counter!
  • Have you listened to the soundtrack on Spotify? This list of songs captures heart of the book. I listened to them for inspiration and to help me get my head back in the book on days I was stuck. If you are a writer, I highly recommend this technique! Currently, I’ve been listing to the Love on the Rocks playlist I put together.   Want to get into Kat and Easton’s heads with me? Check it out here: http://bit.ly/LoveontheRocksSoundtrack

Read on for five things I learned last month, giveaways, and events!

Many blessings to you and yours this new year!

5 THINGS I LEARNED LAST MONTH

  1. Presenting a workshop will not kill you. Now, I have spent thousands of hours presenting in front of kids and adults over the years. Presenting on writing at the library was different because it was all my stuff. It wasn’t someone else’s curriculum, product, or idea. It was all mine. If the audience left unhappy, it would be all on me.
  2. Binge writing is my thing. Some writers have the opportunity and the discipline to write 500 or 1,000 words a day. I can’t seem to master that. I don’t like the word, “can’t” but for this I make an exception. I homeschool my young children and I run three small businesses out of my home. I need to block time when I can get it, and make good use of that time. I can’t write when I’m stressed, distracted, or at home when there’s a million things going on. I need a quiet place, and I need the muse to speak to me. If not, I’m just staring at my screen thinking about all the things that need doing instead. So I’m embracing the binge. I wrote the bulk of Love on the Rocks in two months over about a dozen sittings. I’d say binge writing is working for me! Central Florida friends, stay tuned for info on my upcoming workshop How to Binge Write Your Novel.
  3. Everyone can teach you something. Even the pros learn from each other. I’m still amazed when I talk to a pro and glean things they’ve learned from others. But it’s not limited to the pros – newbie writers, workshop attendees, and friends in your writing group or book club can make an impact on your process and challenge you to acquire new skills.
  4. You should never stop challenging yourself. This applies to life, and to writing. Writing outside the comfort zone of my happily-ever- ever genre to write two paranormal short stories has stretched my creativity and strengthened my research skills.
  5. Even pros have trouble with the first draft. I will never forget Kristan Higgins stating that the first draft was the hardest part for her. Still, after all the books she has written!

5 THINGS I LEARNED LAST MONTH

  1. Reviews are everything! With reviews, you gain visibility. Reviews are especially golden to Indie publishers because they help us expand our readership. Amazon algorithms and good publicity get you noticed by entities that can blow up your readership, like BookBub and bookstores.
  2. Selling books requires mad business skills. Starting an LLC, mastering sales tax, marketing strategies, etc. It’s a LOT to learn and manage!
  3. Publishing a book opens all kids of unexpected doors! Only 2% of people who say they are going to or want to write a book actually finish and get to the publishing stage. Once you have, professionals in the industry take notice and invite you to take part in a variety of things from events to anthologies to interviews to speaking. I’m so blessed and overwhelmed with the offers I am getting.
  4. Once you write a book, your readers get impatient for more. As a reader, I totally get this, and I am sneaking time whenever I can to write! Book 2 in the Crane’s Cove series is currently schedule to launch in late August/early September. I’ll be choosing beta readers in the next couple months. If you’d like to be considered, please leave a review at Amazon and/or Goodreads and send me a message or email. I’d love for you to be one of the first to read Kat and Easton’s story!
  5. Swag is expensive!! Bookmarks, pens, chip clips, sticky notes, etc. cost a pretty penny! What’s your favorite kind of author swag?

I’d love it if you followed me on Twitter @theKerryEvelyn and Instagram @KerryEvelynAuthor!

5 THINGS I LEARNED LAST MONTH

  1. It takes time to go back and forth with cover design, formatting, uploading to CreateSpace and Amazon, and getting all the business stuff together when you are publishing a book. I’m still astonished I was able to keep to my deadline! Next time, I will have it all ready before I set a date. Look for Book 2 sometime late summer or early fall 2018. No solid release date yet, haha!

  2. “Showing up is 80% of life.” – Woody Allen

I posted this quote last month, and I’m posting it again. While I didn’t sell a physical book at Authors in a Box, many doors opened for me that day. People I met, groups I learned about, and the interview I was tricked into doing made it obvious I was supposed to be there. I sold several ebooks on Amazon from handing out my postcards, and one of the people who bought it posted a review stating how awesome s/he thought I was (and the book, too!) I was so humbled and thrilled, I cried at my computer. If it was you, THANK YOU! You made this girl’s week. I went from being disappointed and discouraged to ecstatic and understanding. As everything settles, I can see the big picture, and it is incredible. I gave books to two awesome reviewers, met a beautiful soul who happens to live near me and be part of an inspirational writing group (which she invited me to), spoke at length to the And I Thought Ladies (look up their show on Amazon!), got an awesome tip for breaking into bookstores by the host of the Hanging With web show, and survived my first on-camera interview with said host. Keep an eye out – I’ll be posting it as soon as it’s live!

  3. It is not advised to give your books to friends and family, even if they helped you write it, because they are likely the only ones who will buy your book until you get a following. Oops! LOL! I promised books to my beta readers for their time, and I will not go back on that. This story would not be what it is without their valuable input. And some of the friends and family will be getting books for Christmas because they cost a fortune, and I have not yet had time to go Christmas shopping! Haha! If you got a freebie from me, I would love it if you could leave a review for me on Amazon.  Also, the Kindle version is $2.99, your reviewed is then labeled as “verified,” and can be gifted…just sayin’! Haha!

  4. A busy, pretty display does not attract people to your booth. Big, tall signs, a bright tablecloth, and flashing lights are the way to go! So long, mini Christmas tree and gift baskets! Haha!

  5. Always take payment before you sign a book. Otherwise, you will grow a stack of books you can’t sell, unless you get very lucky! Lesson learned, mischief managed, etc...!

I’d love it if you followed me on Twitter @theKerryEvelyn and Instagram @KerryEvelynAuthor!

Here are a few pics from Authors in a Box and the SpaceCoast Authors of Romance Christmas Party! Find more from my latest adventures on my Facebook page!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! Speaking of Christmas, we’re right in the middle of the 12 Days of Christmas giveaway event. If you haven’t had a chance to stop by yet, it’s not too late! I’m giving away one of my favorite books every day until January 6th on my Facebook page.

My 40th birthday is January 5th! I know, I know, this baby face does not look that old, right? Haha! If you look closely, you’ll find the wrinkles from my laugh lines and freckles from sun exposure – all signs that life is good. God has blessed me so much this year, despite the loss of my precious grandmother last January. He helped me to turn that pain into something productive, and I pushed forward to finish and publish my book, a dream I’d had for as long as I can remember.

I have a not-so-secret birthday wish – 50 Amazon reviews! Magic happens to the algorithms when you hit 50 reviews, so I’ll be reaching out to those who loved the story and setting up a VIP Facebook group. Following in the footsteps of some of my favorite authors, I’ve decided to put together a Review Crew (official name TBD) of fans who read, reviewed, and loved Love on the Edge. The second book in the series, Love on the Rocks, is in the works! The first draft is due to my content editor on March 26th. I’ll be choosing beta readers from the Review Crew, so if you are interested in being one of the first to read the sequel and being part of this exclusive, cozy group, be sure to write a review and let me know where I can find it (Amazon and/or Goodreads). You can post it on my author page, send me the link to it, or message me a screen shot. I’ll be posting tidbits, scenes, maps, pictures, and more from my upcoming story, and I’d love feedback from those who want to know just what is going on between Kat and Easton and the other residents and visitors to Crane’s Cove.

I’m still so full of Christmas spirit, I decided to donate my birthday to Sportsmen for Warriors, a non-profit dreamed up by my friend Cresta Bateman and her husband, Ben. The organization sets up adventurous excursions for active military, veterans, and first responders. Check out their Facebook page to learn about all the wonderful things they are doing to help warriors heal, including their Warrior Guardians Community and partnership with the Veteran Crisis Line. Their motto is “It takes a warrior to heal a warrior.” Much like Lanie and Matt, they have learned that connection between people who have experienced a similar trauma is key to working though that trauma and beginning to live in the “new normal.” I’d love to raise $500 to contribute to their camping trip this April in Ocala, FL. You can donate to my birthday fundraiser until January 31st here: https://www.facebook.com/donate/865325320300226/ or donate to their website anytime. Also, 10% of the profits from Love on the Edge will be donated to this group, so thank you to those who bought the book already! If you haven’t and would like to, you can find it on Amazon!

Wishing you all a fabulous 2018!

5 THINGS I LEARNED LAST MONTH

  1. Everything takes 10 times longer than you plan for; creating an LLC, editing, formatting, deciding on designs, organizing events, etc. To be fair, I was warned, haha! I have given myself some very tight deadlines and the pressure is on. However, this keeps me focused and accountable, so I’m not sure I’d have changed anything – yet!

  2. “Showing up is 80% of life.” – Woody Allen

You wouldn’t believe the friendships I’ve made, the things I’ve learned, and the ideas I’ve gotten, just for attending a workshop, meeting, or event. Here’s another one: “Get up, dress up, show up, and never give up.” – Genevieve Rhode

Funny story – I dressed up for a writing conference last January; just a simple dress and a blazer. When I checked in, I was asked if I was a presenter! I stood out from majority who were mostly clad in jeans and t-shirts (how I envied them). At the Rita Awards, I overdressed (a tad…!) because it was a fancy occasion and I wanted a ball gown, tiara, and pretty hair. Instead of being self-conscious as I sparkled in sea of elegant black and jewel-toned evening gowns, I owned it. My inner introvert was cringing and paranoid the whole time, but on the outside, I was determined to have a blast, and I did! Plus, so many compliments! It fueled my confidence and I talked to people I wouldn’t otherwise had met because they approached me. Would you believe I am so painfully shy? It’s easy for me to talk to you if you talk to me first, but it’s rare I initiate conversation with a stranger. I’m working on it.

  3. It’s okay to say “no.” In fact, is crucial to survival. I have been working on this lesson my whole life. My fear has always been “if I don’t do it, no one will.” Sometimes, that’s the case, but other times it opens a door for someone else to shine. I’ve stopped volunteering for things that don’t go toward my goals or our family’s goals, even when it pains me. I’ve cut down on oil classes, big events at my home, and kid invitations. I’ve realized when I say yes to those things, often times I am saying no to my family or my writing time. Time is something you can never get back. I’m very conscious how I’m spending my hours; I want them to be productive, not busy. I’m re-learning this lesson as an author. I’m not even published yet, and I’ve been invited to several events and to be a part of no less than 5 anthologies. Wow! It’s humbling, exciting, and so hard to turn down what could be a door to something bigger. This is where my faith comes in. I depend on daily prayer and meditation to let the Spirit guide me into choosing the best things. I start many days with this Crazy Blessed Morning Meditation. Try it out!

  4. Planking cures writers’ block. No joke! It’s painful, and thus I have trained my mind to go elsewhere to hold the longest plank possible. My dear friend who forces this torture (and several of her own original painful concepts) upon is quite proud of me, however she doesn’t know I go off to another world and I think she secretly thinks I like planks. Nope! You’ll keep this secret for me, right? I wouldn’t want risk her wrath – who knows what new things she may dream up!

  5. I did an insanely fantastic job of putting together the best team to get my book out into the world. Not bragging, just stating a fact. I will have five pages of acknowledgements at the end of my book, and I pray I have not forgotten anyone!!

Release of Love on the Edge on Amazon - December 5th is the goal! Please pray with me that all deadlines will be met and my book will release on time!

    Authors in a Box, December 9th, 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
    Melbourne Square Mall
Authors in a Box brings authors and readers together because books are more than just stories, created by award-winning author Jaimie Engle of The Write Engle. Books will include Picture Books, Chapter Books, Middle Grade, Young Adult, New Adult, and Adult. Genre fiction such as horror, sci-fi, fantasy, romance, thriller, etc. Non-fiction to include topic specific, educational, teaching, self-help, etc. This is a great place to grab some last minute gifts just before the holidays. In addition, Carrie Friday Media Specialist of Southwest Middle School will have students wrapping your book purchases in exchange for donations to their media center. The authors have contributed books to a mall giveaway along with collections for local schools in need. Please feel free to bring a gently used book to donate and make sure you enter to win the grand prize.
